Shhhhhh…. Acoustics Matter!!!

Sound advice

With acoustic performance in the workspace becoming increasingly important, there are several factors to consider. For example, are you soundproofing for privacy or managing ambient noise?

When soundproofing a space (office/boardroom/consultation room) for privacy reasons, achieving the desired RW rating in the construction of your room is critical.

There are a number of ways this can be achieved. Walls can be insulated with acoustic batts and constructed utilising a denser sound rated plasterboard. Acoustic ceiling tiles with insulation above or plasterboard ceilings can also be effective along with an acoustically rated door and seals.

Sound penetrates the ‘path of least resistance.’ Glass partitioning creates a weak point unless a double-glazed system is installed and a poorly designed air conditioning system will also compromise the effectiveness of sound transfer.

Other options include the use of ‘sound-masking’ with audio in the areas immediately adjacent to your room requiring privacy.

For ambient noise management there are an equal number of great solutions. Most offices feature an open plan flexible layout. Modern workspaces include polished concrete floors and open ceiling spaces with exposed services. These so called ‘hard surfaces’ are not favourable to a good acoustic environment. Soft furnishings including privacy screens can add not only colour and style to your workspace but also improve acoustics. The use of ‘acoustic’ chairs and couches can be used for semiprivate mini meetings and there are some great pinboards or decorative sound absorbing wall panelling that can be strategically installed for better overall acoustic performance.

At DanPro we not only have expertise in acoustic workspace performance, but we also have access to world leading suppliers and manufacturers of the latest products in this space.
